What is CBD?


Demand for cannabis compounds like cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is rising steadily due to the multitude of health benefits they offer. Both of them are found naturally in the cannabis sativa plant. While the molecular structure of the two compounds may be similar, they are both very different.



Currently, there are 85 identified cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, the two most common being Tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol. CBD oil is primarily extracted from the hemp plant. CBD and THC have the same chemical formula however, the atoms are differently arranged. CBD oil contains a high concentration of cannabidiol. CBD does not create a psychoactive effect and is used for medicinal purposes. It is known to treat pain, stress, depression, anxiety, nausea and inflammation.

A tincture is in liquid form and is a dietary supplement. CBD rich hemp flowers are immersed in alcohol and cooked in moderate temperatures to produce them. The final tincture is generally mixed with sweet oil. Although it has a very high CBD content, it contains less than 0.3% THC. Tinctures are not psychoactive and can also be used for the management of many conditions.


THC is the main component in the cannabis plant that is psychoactive. This means that it is responsible for creating the sensation of ‘high’ that is associated with the use of cannabis. THC heightens fatigue, hunger and sense of smell, sight and hearing. Despite its negative effects, it also aids in relaxation, insomnia, anxiety, pain and aggression. 


THC and CBD both interact with our body’s cannabinoid receptors. However, they both differ in the effects they have on it. They both have the exact same molecular structure with the exception of the arrangement of a single atom. They consist of 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms. CBD contains a hydroxyl group where as THC has a cyclic ring. This may seem insignificant but it leads to different effects. The CB1 cannabinoid receptor is stimulated by THC which causes its euphoric effects. CBD, however, changes the shape of the CB1 cannabinoid receptors.

Since CBD is a non-psychoactive component, it does not create the same ‘high’ effect that THC does. Even though they have similar health benefits, CBD does not produce a sense of euphoria like THC.

The side effects of THC are more severe and intolerable than CBD. Although THC causes temporary side effects such as memory loss and slower reaction time, they might affect the user negatively in the long term.

Evidence states that CBD is more effective for inflammation and neuropathic pain. On the other hand, THC may perform better for spasticity. It is true that THC has great health benefits for people. However, CBD can provide many similar benefits without producing its mind-altering effects.  

Moreover, THC has been classified as an illegal substance in the United States due to its tendency to produce euphoric effects on the user. CBD oil is considered much safer to use. However, none is better than the other. Both can guarantee the relief you require.
